How to estimate grades and GPA

Calculate a weighted course grade

If assignments have different weights, multiply each category grade by its percentage weight, then add the results. Convert percentages to decimals before multiplying.

Formula: Course grade = (category grade × category weight) + (category grade × category weight) + ...

For example, suppose a class has homework worth 30%, quizzes worth 20%, and exams worth 50%. If your averages are 88% for homework, 76% for quizzes, and 82% for exams, the estimate is:

A three-credit course with a 4.0 grade-point value contributes 12 grade points. A one-credit course with a 4.0 contributes 4. The grade-point value is the same, but the contribution to the overall average differs because the course carries a different credit value.

For cumulative GPA, combine the grade points and credits from all included terms. Avoid averaging semester GPAs unless every semester contains the same number of credits. A credit-based calculation is more reliable when course loads vary.

This result is a planning estimate. Check that the target is mathematically possible and that the exam weight has been entered correctly. Comparing two GPA scenarios

Imagine a student has completed 12 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.10. The existing grade points are 12 × 3.10 = 37.2. In the next term, the student expects 12 more credits and wants to estimate the effect of earning a 3.50 term GPA.

The projected total is 37.2 + (12 × 3.50) = 79.2 grade points across 24 credits. The projected cumulative GPA is 79.2 ÷ 24 = 3.30. This illustrates why current credit totals matter: the same future term GPA can produce different cumulative results for students at different stages of a program.

Use scenarios to guide effort, not to label yourself. Compare a likely result with a stretch result, then identify which remaining assignments have enough weight to change the outcome.
